Biography
Jeremy John Irons was born on the 19th of September in 1948 in Cowes on the Isle of
Wight (A small island which lies on the southern coast of England). He was the
youngest of three children. His father was a tax consultant, although Jeremy himself
wasn’t very fond of figures. When he left school, he felt like he wanted to do something
completely different with his life. He himself once said he would have liked to live a life
as a gypsy. Instead of going to the army, as he was advised, he joined Bristol Old Vic’s
repertory company, where he gained much experience and played in various
Shakespearian plays. In 1971 he moved to London, where he had a few jobs such as
assistant stage manager, house-cleaner, “busker” (singing and playing guitar outside
movie theaters), and gardener, before he gained a part in the musical “Godspell”.
In 1978 he married the Irish actress Sinéad Cusack. She gave birth to their first son,
Samuel, in september 1978.
His first television debut was in 1980 in “Nijinsky”. After that, he received a part in
“Brideshead Revisted”, an eleven episode series based on the novel by Evelyn Waugh.
After that, he decided to become an actor permanently.
In 1984, he played in his first Broadway production, along with Glen Close in “The Real
Thing”, which won him a Tony Award.
His wife Sinéad gave birth to their second son, Maximilian in October 1985.
He won the New York Critics Best Actor Award for his role in “Dead Ringers” in 1988.
His oldest son, Sam, made his film debut in 1989, in Roald Dahl’s “Danny the
Champion of the World”, in which Jeremy plays William Smith, Danny’s father.
In 1990 he won an Oscar for part in “Reversal of Fortune”
For the little ones among us, his voice is known from ‘Scar’ from Disney’s “Lion King”. A
year later, he played in Die Hard 3: With a Vengeance. He played Simon Gruber, brother
of ‘Hans Gruber’ (played by Alan Rickman in Die Hard (1988)). In 1997, he acted in
Vladimir Nabokov’s “Lolita”. To some, this movie was very shocking, as it contained
aberrant sexuality, a strong scene of violence, nudity and some language. But Jeremy
managed to get nominated for an MTV Movie Award for this role. In “The Man in the Iron
Mask” he starred alongside John Malkovich, Gérard Depardieu, Gabriel Byrne and
Leonardo DiCaprio as one of the four Musketeers.
In 2000 he bought Kilcoe Castle in County Cork, Ireland. He was a Member of jury at the
Cannes Film Festival that same year
In 2003, he appeared in a Comic Relief sketch entitled "Harry Potter and the Secret
Chamberpot of Azerbaijan", a parody on the Harry Potter movies. Jeremy played
‘Severus Snape’.
After that, he is known for his roles in “Dungeons & Dragons” (As Profion), Spakespear’
s “The Merchant of Venice”, “Being Julia”, “Kingdom of Heaven” and in “Eragon” (As
Brom)
He won an Emmy for his role as Lord Dudley, duke of Leicester in HBO’s “Elizabeth I” in
2005. In 2007, he was President of the jury at 2007 Sarajevo Film Festival.
He is a good horse rider, enjoys skiing, motor bikes, and gardening. He currently owns
Audi A6 Quatro estate, BMW cruising bike, and Ducati motorbike. He used to own a
Morris Minor, Honda 50, and a Volkswagen rag-top Beetle.
